How Comparison Slowly Kills Our Confidence

Have you ever felt like you exist, but no one really sees you?

I’ve been there many times, especially as a young woman. I took myself way too seriously. I spent a lot of time comparing myself to my friends. Where they lived, what car they drove, what they wore, who they were dating, etc.

I was always trying to be someone I wasn’t, instead of just being myself. Luckily, I went through this phase before social media was a thing. But I still felt sub-par, ashamed, and lacking self-confidence.

I can tell you from experience, that is no way to live. Before I changed things around, my anxiety was through the roof and I always felt depressed.

It wasn’t until I learned how to be myself and not let society dictate who I was, I then began to feel more seen.

Here are three ways you can stop comparing yourself to others.

Recognize you are doing it. Acknowledging you are constantly comparing yourself to your friends, or people you follow on social media is half the battle.

When you notice yourself doing this, give yourself a little pep talk. It’s ok to admire someone for their accomplishments or talents, but dwelling on it isn’t.

Take a social media break. If you find that social media is the cause of your anxiety, or feeling unseen, take a break.

Delete the app from your phone for at least one week. Notice how better you feel mentally at the end of the week. Congratulate yourself for making progress.

Practice gratitude. If you’re the journaling type, start a gratitude journal. Every morning, write down three things you’re grateful for.
